The Seeds of Mbono.

I had asked mum about a certain tree whose details I could only vaguely recall and that way I succeeded in provoking a story time moment. She stopped what she was doing so that she could seize a rare opportunity to pass down a tale. I composed myself and got ready to listen.

“Unlike other trees that drop their seeds near themselves, when the pods of this one dry up, it bursts and disperses the contents far and wide. It’s a phenomenon that was used to describe women by virtue of their leaving their parental homes to go and get married elsewhere. Women were said to be like the seeds of Mbono that fly away, far away to go and conceive elsewhere, away from home.”

So, the tree is called Mbono.

“Those seeds are also cosmetic. In a tradition that is now no more, rococo women who spotted dreadlocks would use the oil made from the seeds to curl their hair.”

Ancient times were also vibrant in their own way. In those days, there was no Revlon, but there were Mbono seeds.

“your great grandmother used to like it so much…” she went on.

The Tree of Snakes.

Way back while growing up in some leafy countryside, we would only identify a certain tree as ‘the tree of snakes’. It was a small knee-high green shrub whose base-point was surrounded by clumps of foam that looked like snake spit. In our outdoors, we would smash the shrub into pieces whenever we noticed it germinating anywhere because, as we were told, it invited snakes. In a previous generation, my uncle now tells me, they never used to smash it. They'd uproot it wholly and use its hollow stem as a flute, courtesy of their childhood craftsmanship to make their own toys.

I would later encounter the tree of snakes as a graphical depiction of magic and other themes of mystery. A prop in harry-porter style movies and other horror stories, and I knew that the tree of snakes wasn’t just fodder for empty folklore or a meaningless myth and our smashing it wasn’t just for child play either.

My latest encounter with the tree of snakes is when I was admiring the lush backyard. My walk through the green fields suddenly stopped when I noticed the feeble stems of the shrub jutting up. I  immediately turned away to look for a smasher. Old habits die hard! It occurs to me that there aren’t any children in the village to take up the smashing. Perhaps, in the near future, if folklore survives and these crawling toddlers have grown up a little bit, they too might come up with their own ways of dealing with the tree of  snakes.

This time it’s more disgusting. I detest its location in the midst of my all time favorite horticultural delicacy. I refuse to admit that the tree of snakes is actually sharing air and occasionally gets caressed by the soft tendrils of my juicy ‘tsalakushe’.

The tree of snakes still exists, and I would smash it anytime I spot it, anywhere, just like I used to smash it while I was growing up, way back.

Hiring.

An employer is an entrepreneur. He is the owner of a Money- making idea. He lodges himself somewhere within the economic activities of the day, grabs a niche, and sets up a "trap" strategically within the confines of the realtime circulation of money, so that he may be able to attract, and temporarily own a portion of the money zooming around. He calls that trap, his business.

He then realizes that he can not manage the trap alone. He needs a workforce to monitor it, maintain it, and basically, manage it. He needs people that will help him to convert his abstract ideas into solid results of a working plan. He wants to hire you!

He is not looking for outstanding academic qualifications or a fancy degree from a fancy school, No. In fact, he is oblivious of your level of theoretical education. He will be content with someone who is of sound mind and has a reasonable IQ.

He is not looking for a genius, or exceptionally brilliant minds. No! In fact, he doesn't even care what you know or are capable of doing with your brains. He only cares about what YOU can do for HIM.

In short, an employer normally searches for a team player. Someone who can work with others and aim at achieving the same goals. Someone who sees himself as a link of a chain between ends. Someone who will "stop" to think on himself and do what he's required to do by the business. Someone who will give up conflicting personal self interests in favor of the business that they're working for.

An ideal employee is someone who should be ready to lose his ego and submit to the fact that he is not the originator of the initial idea. He is in fact a hijacker who gets away with the crime. That should be the highlight of his humility before the employer. He should know that he is only just getting on board and that the only of his opinions that would matter are those that will be captured by the spirit of the original idea.

An ideal employee should know the objectives of the business. This will help him to identify himself with the rest of the team as they work together. It will also help him to pin-point any deviations that may emerge in the course of work. It will also help him to suggest improvements to further fine- tune the business operations. The employee does not therefore feel out of place and is able to identify himself with the business.

In turn the ideal employer adheres to the "PROCEED" Model of employee selection. (Kreitner & Mohapatra, Management, Edition 8, 2009. Biztantra). Here, the employer prepares the job description and analysis. Then he reviews interview questions, organizes the interview, conduct it, then evaluate the match between the job and the candidate, exchanges the data in a meeting, and finally makes a decision on the ideal candidate.

This in a nutshell, sums up the whole ballgame of employment testing between employer and employee.

Make It Last Forever...

Before Mariah reaches the part that says, "Make it last forever", earlier lyrics had already taken me into nostalgia lane. Am seated in a Matatu and a song that combines three of my all-time favorite artists begins to play. An old enough song to now graduate into the "ol-skull". A song I used to love so much until I copied it ten times into the same CD. I would insert the disc into player and listen from song number one to the last one. The same song.

A classical seductive song. There is a part that Nas raps, "You taste like banana cake, you shaped like the number eight". Then enters Joe with his refined voice-overs that puts you in an eerie melancholic moment of lyrical recall. Music, my ultimate opium, stole my moment and unearthed old, fond memories.

"Make it last forever, make it last, make it last...

Natural Cure For Acne.

You are luckier and safer right now if you suffer from acne, than Adam and Eve would've been in the garden of Eden, searching for the right herbs in the midst of unfamiliar vegetation, inside God's own natural pharmacy. This article, just like God probably did to the first couple, will direct you to the right natural cure for acne.

Acne can manifest itself on your face, chest or at the back in different forms, but the cure works out the same way across all the versions. Let's do a Cause/Remedy approach for better understanding.

Acne results from the following causes:
  1. Propionibacterium acnes, (P.acnes): This is a bacteria whose residence in the hair follicles on the skin can cause blockage of the follicles and inflammation of acne nodules.
  2. Hormonal Imbalance: Acne could just be a symptom of inherent psychological problems. Stress, low self esteem and depression, or the use of anabolic steroids can lead to excessive production of androgen and high Testosterone levels in the body that can enlarge the sebaceous glands, which then end up increasing their production of sebum, (which is a cocktail of naturally occurring oil, fatty acids and dead skin cells) that block skin follicles and constitute the major contents of acne nodules.
  3. High levels of toxins: This could arise from an over-loaded liver, reactions from allergies or feeding on too much junk food continuously like a pig, without giving the body enough time to digest and rest! The body then regards these excess foods as toxins and could lead to inflammation of the skin, hence acne.

So far, we are well on track with our approach to understand the causes of acne and their respective remedies. Let's now open up our minds, reason together and find out how the following natural cures have stood the test of time.

  1. Honey: This is a natural antibiotic that contains anti-bacterial properties that can combat P.acnes if applied on the affected skin of a non-allergic sufferer, and later rinsed in periodic intervals like twice or thrice a day.
  2. Water: The proverbial eight glasses of water per day is a cure for acne, selectively prescribed according to age, sex and the levels of activity of a person. Water flashes out bacteria and prevents the build-up of bacteria by acting as the medium of excreting them out.
  3. Relax. Get enough sleep and avoid acne: This reduces physical and psychological stress associated with hormonal imbalances.
  4. Aloe Vera: Other than a sexy name, its leaves can be squeezed to produce a fluid that when applied on affected skin can help fight the bacteria, reduce pains and heal acne scars permanently.
  5. Olive oil: This natural lotion contains anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory agents that can effectively put an end to acne and leave no scars behind.
  6. Vegetables: A vegetarian diet rich in vitamins A,B and C helps the skin tissues to regenerate and supply the much needed neutralizers of testosterone.
  7. Natural anti-androgen e.g: Green tea, pumpkin seeds oil, nettle, spear mint tea, dandelion roots e.t.c. help to cleanse the liver and puts it in perfect shape to be able to process all the toxins and have them excreted through the normal digestive system, instead of having them accumulated on acne nodules. Dandelion roots also help in hormonal balance which is still a task of the liver. Failure to achieving the balance can lead to the excess hormones stored in the skin cells to catalyze excess sebum production leading to acne forming in the hair follicles.

You must have noticed how all of them revolve around fighting bacteria, achieving hormonal balance and combating toxins. These in a nutshell, are some of the most common and accessible natural cure for acne.
